Ripped from the page (Violet Fenn)

Interviews with the characters we all love with a little help from the authors that wrote them.

In this case Violet Fenn

In no more than 5 words explain your ambitions:

Fun, friendship, happiness, endless curiosity

Favourite place and why?

My bookshop, because it smells of books, old leather and coal tar soap. I’ve never discovered where the coal tar smell comes from, actually. I prefer Imperial Leather, myself.

Favourite weapon and why?

Roget’s Thesaurus, because if you get the hardback edition, it’s useful in both intellectual and physical combat. Roget himself is a terrible snob, of course. One of these days I’ve a mind to start telling people about his drug-dabbling period—that’ll take the gilt off his garnish.

Favourite moment and why?

I have several favourite moments, all of them during my brief yet divine dalliance with Elizabeth Bathory. What a woman.

Most significant enemy and why?

Too many to count, mostly husbands of the many delightful creatures I’ve been lucky enough to meet over the centuries. And sometimes the wives.

Tell me about your childhood:

We didn’t have childhoods in the 12th century, sweetheart. All I know is that I was born and somehow survived til adulthood—an achievement in itself, back then. And then I just…kept going, and here I am today. A walking wonder, you might say.

Where would you be now if you had made better choices?

There are no right or wrong choices, darling. We’re all just butterflies, endlessly flapping our wings.

Anything you’d like to say to your maker?

Did you really have to include the pigeon shit on my glass roof? I have some standards, you know.

Thank you for your time, please feel free to leave a parting statement:

Remember, kids – the most persistent hate is that which doth degenerate from love. I’m very proud of that quote.
