In no more than 5 words explain your ambitions:

Save the worlds. Go home.

Favourite place and why?

The Hideout. It’s a cave in the woods I found by accident last summer. Jackson—he’s my best friend—and I hang out there as often as we can. We play boardgames and read comics, and that’s where we keep all our bottle caps and cool rocks. We “borrowed” some old sleeping bags and an LED lantern from Jackson’s dad’s camping stuff to make it comfortable and it’s the best secret fort ever.

Favourite weapon and why?

Uh… I don’t really have any weapons in the first book. But my friend Sasha is amazing with a bow and arrows. And daggers. If I can figure out how to use my magic without accidently blowing things up, then maybe I can figure out how to make fireballs. That would be pretty cool.

Favourite moment and why?

Lately? Meeting Ayslenne is kind of what sent me on this whole wild quest. Without her, I never would have known about Arcania or that magic is actually real. I would never have learned the secrets I now know about my family, or manifested my Talent, and I never would have met Sasha and her brothers, either. So, I guess meeting Ayslenne is my favourite moment. But don’t tell her that! It’d go right to her head and make her even more impossible than she already is. (And, uh… maybe don’t mention that I called her “impossible”, either, okay?)

Most significant enemy and why?

Gideon Blackthorn, the false emperor who controls all of Arcania with his dark magic and enchanted army of crows. He thinks I’m some Chosen One from this old prophecy and now he wants to kill me. I’m twelve, for crying out loud! How can I possibly be a threat to him?!

Tell me about your childhood:

There’s not much to tell, really. My mom died in a terrible fire when I was just a few days old but I survived, somehow. My dad has hated fireplaces ever since. He’s a professor at the university and teaches anthropology. He expects me to love schools as much as he does, but I just don’t. I already know everything they’re trying to teach me and I get so booooored.

Where would you be now if you had made better choices?

You mean like not following the weird girl from school through a lightning-covered portal in the woods? I guess I’d still be sitting in Mr. Mayhew’s math class, bored out of my mind. But at least no one would be trying to kill me. Well, maybe stupid Cooper Carson and his stupid gang of stupid bullies. But at least Cooper can’t throw fireballs or torture people with magic.

Anything you’d like to say to your maker?

Tell me I’m going to beat Gideon in the end? Please? I hate how much he’s hurting the people of Arcania and what he’s done to my friends’ families. I hate what he’s done to my family.

Thank you for your time, please feel free to leave a parting statement:

Beware the crows. Always count them so you know what’s coming. But don’t hurt them—it’s not their fault. And maybe someday, if we can stop Gideon, they can be kids again.
