To be left alone, forever

Favourite place and why?

My apartment on Middle Abbey Street, Dublin. It is the ideal bachelor pad for a private detective that works magically inclined cases. Mainly because I have it warded against any fairy entering without my permission. It’s my Fortress of Solitude.

Favourite weapon and why?

I’m fond of fireballs. It is a low cost, high yield, magical spell when you need to attack somebody. Given my half-breed nature, I have a limited array of spells I can cast quickly so the fireball is one that gets used regularly. Plus, it looks hella cool to conjure a sphere of fire out of nowhere.

Favourite moment and why?

When I managed to pull one over on Lé Precon, the King of the Leprechauns. For decades he has wanted to get one up on me, then I solved a case for him, and he owed me a wish. A wish from a leprechaun is a big deal, but one from The King of the little green oddballs is next level. You can literally change reality with a wish of that power level.

Most significant enemy and why?

I did have to battle Balor the One-Eye, an evil god from ancient Celtic times. He was trying to do a thing that would have rewritten the very fabric of time and basically erased all humans from Ireland forever. You don’t take on an ancient and demonic deity without making them an enemy for life. I’m still not sure if the rumbling under my bed is Balor cursing me from his prison or a pipe that needs to be fixed in floor.

Tell me about your childhood:

Oh no, that’s one thing I’ll never do. There is power in information and if people, in particular the fairies, knew about my childhood then it would be dangerous for me. I had a mortal mother and a fairy father, which is why I am a human that can channel magic. But if I start dropping names and places the nefarious fairies out there will use their magics to make sure I was never born.

Where would you be now if you had made better choices?

That’s an excellent question. I’m not sure. I was never able to use my magical abilities to improve my life through financial means as there are forces which would have ensured I did not stay wealthy for long. Getting into teaching just felt like voluntary torture. But there was a need for me to act as a defender of the mortal world against anything the fairy folk might try, so I just did that. I’m sure if I lived for another century I would have a better answer.

Anything you’d like to say to your maker?

Yes, actually, now that I have the chance. I find it weird that you write about me when I am asleep. It is a very strange and disturbing sort of voyeurism. Like what do you get out of telling people how I just crashed into my bed still dressed because I was too tired to get undressed? Seek help!

Thank you for your time, please feel free to leave a parting statement:

What sort of spells do leprechauns use? Lucky charms! I’m here all week, tip your server..
